Maximizing India’s Demographic Dividend & Its Global Implications: A European Opportunity - 1st July 2017

Maximizing India’s Demographic Dividend & Its Global Implications:

A European Opportunity

1st July 2017

14.00 hrs – 18.00 hrs

Venue: Bharat Bhawan, Tesselsestraat 65, Den Haag, NL

In the demographic evolution of a country there comes a period of time when the share of working age population in the total population is rising and the share of dependents is declining. This period of time or window of opportunity has profound implications for the economic growth of the country.

When the ratio of the working population in the total population increases and the ratio of the dependents declines, it increases the ability of the workers to save and invest more. The extra economic growth resulting from this phenomenon or window of opportunity is called demographic dividend.

To maximize the demographic dividend it is important for the country to create gainful employment opportunities for the working age population. In the absence of suitable employment opportunities

the presence of young persons without work instead of contributing to demographic dividend can become a demographic liability.

India is currently in that phase of its demographic evolution where a very substantial portion of its total population is in the working age group. This gives India a tremendous opportunity for accelerating its rate of economic growth.

The purpose of the seminar which the FCCI is organizing on this subject is to create greater awareness about this phenomenon and suggest policy options for maximizing India’s demographic

dividend. In this context the seminar will also propose a big opportunity for Europe.
